clear aligners - Invisalign

Invisalign is the most well-known form of clear aligner therapy, an orthodontic treatment that’s designed to help patients achieve a straight smile. If your dentist in NW Calgary advises you to consider receiving this form of care, it’s important to ask questions so that you know exactly what to expect. Doing so will help you feel more confident and less anxious when it’s time for your next appointment.

At our local dental office, we offer orthodontics to those who need it. To learn more about this process, please feel free to contact us.

Why Choose Invisalign?

Your dentist may recommend acquiring Invisalign for several reasons, and they’re noted below:

• Crooked teeth
• Overcrowding
• Bite problems (underbite, overbite, crossfire)
• Jaw dysfunction
• Improving the aesthetic of your smile

You’ll need to attend a consultation with a dental expert before you can officially get started with any form of treatment, orthodontic or otherwise. Your dentist will discuss your medical and dental history as well as your personal goals. They will physically examine your oral cavity and then take scans of your smile to see how your tooth roots and bones are faring. If you’re a good candidate for Invisalign near you, they will let you know.

Depending on your situation, traditional metal braces might be advised if you’re dealing with severe functional problems. You may also be referred to an orthodontist.

How Invisalign Works

Once you’ve been approved for the treatment, your dentist will take impressions or digital scans of your top and bottom row of teeth. This information is used to create sets of trays from high-grade dental plastic, a material that is biocompatible and FDA-approved; it won’t cause any irritation or swelling, not to mention that they are quite comfortable.

You’re expected to wear your aligners for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours every day. If not, you probably won’t achieve the results you’re hoping for.

The trays themselves exert continual pressure on all your teeth, which, in turn, triggers bone movement and regeneration. Over an extended time, they are encouraged to assume a healthier, namely straighter, position. On average, treatment lasts anywhere from 12 months to 2 years; keep note, however, that not every treatment journey will be the same.

Life with Invisalign

Here are some tips to follow to make sure that your treatment goes as smoothly as possible:

  1. Remove them during mealtimes.
  2. Adhere to a normal dental hygiene routine.
  3. Clean your trays frequently. Soaking them in Invisalign-safe solutions will help with this.
  4. Keep your aligners in a safe place when you’re not wearing them.
  5. Only drink water when wearing your aligners.
  6. Avoid consuming food and drinks that leave behind noticeable stains.
  7. Attend every one of your periodic checkups.

Upon starting your treatment, you may feel a bit of some discomfort; not to worry, it will go away quickly when your mouth gets used to the sensation. But if you ever experience any pain, discomfort, or have further concerns, don’t hesitate to speak with a dentist near you.
