What is Sleep, Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a dangerous condition that occurs when breathing is interrupted while you sleep. These stoppages or pauses in breathing can occur hundreds of times a night without you even realizing. If left untreated, it can pose a significant health risk to patients in the form of oxygen deprivation. Drastic problems can result from oxygen deprivation, including heart disease, increased risk of heart attack or stroke, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, and learning/memory problems. Continuous oxygen deprivation during sleep can also potentially decrease your lifespan by up to 15 years. Dentists often see the associated physical conditions of OSA, like the wear of your teeth from clenching and grinding, and the effects on your gum tissue and your jawbone in the mouth.

What are the Common Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep
  • Abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking
  • Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Morning headache
  • Difficulty concentrating during the day
  • Experiencing mood changes, such as depression or irritability
  • High blood pressure
  • Nighttime sweating
  • Decreased libido

What Are Some Common Causes of Sleep Apnea?

  • Large tonsils or adenoids can obstruct your airway
  • The shape of the head and neck may create a smaller than normal airway
  • Being overweight or obese can constrict your airway
  • Throat and tongue muscles relax more during sleep which can block your airway
  • Snoring can cause the soft palate to become inflamed and swollen, which in turn can obstruct the airway
  • Nasal congestion, nasal blockage, and nasal irritants can constrict your airway
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Other physical conditions, disorders and syndromes

What is the treatment for OSA?

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is often recommended treatment for patients with OSA. However, not everyone is able to remain compliant with this form of treatment. Many find it cumbersome to travel with, and they can be bulky, noisy, and very uncomfortable to wear. Oral Appliance Therapy may be an alternate treatment for you.

Oral Appliance Therapy in NW Calgary for OSA

Sandstone Dental is pleased to offer oral appliance therapy treatment for OSA. An oral appliance to treat OSA is a custom-fit device that fits securely in your mouth over your upper and lower teeth and repositions the lower jaw to open the airway and prevent the tongue and soft tissue in the back of the throat from collapsing when sleeping. Oral appliance therapy positions the tongue and lower jaw to keep the airway open during sleep and therefore encourages sufficient oxygen delivery throughout your body. It is easy to wear, small and convenient to carry when travelling, and much more comfortable than a CPAP machine, and has been proven effective to treat OSA.
